FAQs
How long does it take to complete?
Full-time students can complete the master's degree in one academic year (from October to June, with an extension until September for the oral defense of the MA thesis).
Part-time students can complete the master's degree in 2 or even 3 years.
What languages are studied in the master's program?
Students must work on at least 2 of the 3 languages of the master's program, which they are free to choose. Therefore, the student will be able to choose between 4 possible linguistic itineraries:
- Spanish + Catalan
- Spanish + English
- Catalan + English
- English + Spanish + Catalan
Those enrolled in the master's degree will work to achieve an expert command of the languages they have chosen (English: C1+/C2; Spanish: C2; Catalan: C2).
Are there any entry requirements for the master's degree?
It is necessary to be in possession of a C1 level certificate (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR) of the 2 or 3 chosen languages (depending on the chosen itinerary) or to pass a test certifying this level.
In case the candidate demonstrates a B2+ in the above mentioned test or presents a certificate certifying this level, he/she will be admitted to the master and will have to take complementary courses.
What are the additional courses and when are they taken?
Students starting at a B2+ level are required to take complementary courses to attain the C1 proficiency level in the language or languages of their chosen master's degree program.
All the complements can be taken virtually and while taking the subjects of the master's degree. They are divided between the two semesters.
The number of language complements per language is 12 (in two courses each semester of 6 credits each).
Therefore, the offer of complementary courses is as follows:
- 1st semester
- 6 credits of complementary courses in English
- 6 credits of complementary courses in Spanish
- 6 credits of complementary courses in Catalan.
- 2nd semester
- 6 credits of complementary courses in English
- 6 credits of complementary courses in Spanish
- 6 credits of complementary courses in Catalan.
How are candidates selected if there is more demand than supply?
If the demand exceeds the number of places available for the master's degree, which is limited to 20, the applications will be examined by the committee responsible for the master's degree program, which will select the candidates according to the criteria set out below in the order indicated, i.e. only the second criterion will be applied if the number of candidates meeting the first requirement is greater than 20.
- Previous degree studies: Journalism, Philology or other related degrees (for example: Audiovisual Communication, Marketing, Advertising, on the one hand, and Translation, Applied Languages, Linguistics, on the other).
- Numerical evaluation of the academic record of the previous degree studies.
Only in the event that demand continues to exceed supply once these 2 criteria have been applied will priority be given to candidates who choose an itinerary that includes Catalan.
According to the above, in each enrollment period, candidates who hold a degree that is NOT related to those mentioned in point 1, may be admitted to the master's degree if there are vacancies, i.e., not covered by candidates with related degrees.
Are there any kind of validations offered or academic credits awarded?
Those students who can show working experience in any fields of the master's degree and/or can provide evidence of having undertaken preliminary training (PhD courses, or related masters or studies) will be able to have some credits recognised, taking into account the limitations on the recognition of credits marked by the legislation. Is it fully online and asynchronous?
It is 100% online. There are no face-to-face sessions (except for the internships, which are in person).
It is also fully asynchronous, meaning there are no fixed schedules. All communication takes place through the virtual campus, and students are expected to log in daily to stay up to date with all published content.
However, as we aim to support students throughout the learning process, we organize approximately two synchronous tutorials per course via videoconference. These tutorials are used to resolve doubts, complete tasks with the guidance of the teaching staff, and hold discussion seminars.
Dates and times are agreed upon between the teaching staff and students, always applying maximum flexibility. When necessary, alternative solutions are offered to compensate for the inability to attend synchronous sessions.
How are the online exams conducted?
- The session will be recorded for the purpose of being reviewed during the assessment and/or revision process. With regard to the recording of personal data of students at the University of Lleida, the regulations explicitly allow the recording of various teaching activities. These recordings will be stored at the University of Lleida for the duration established in the applicable regulations. The regulations themselves state that the UdL does not require the consent of the individuals concerned for such recordings, as indicated in the course guide for each subject from the beginning of the academic year (https://unidisc.csuc.cat/index.php/s/6YmWjHtUWcryan1).
- Students are required to meet the following technical specifications at the time of the examination:
- Computer
- Webcam
- Speakers (headphones are not allowed)
- Wireless microphone (not integrated into headphones)
- High-speed internet connection
- Specific software installed on the computer used to take the exam (these will be specified during the course)
- At the beginning of the examination, the student must show their national ID (or another valid identification document) to the webcam in order to verify their identity. It is also necessary for the student to be visible on camera while presenting their ID.
- The student must also use the webcam to show the room where the exam is being taken to the teaching staff. This preparation phase will not be recorded. In any case, the scanning must be done slowly, with adequate lighting so that the teaching staff can clearly verify the following:
- That the room is small in size.
- That the room is closed.
- That it is well lit.
- That the workspace is free of notes and other materials (books, papers, etc.).
- That the student is alone in the room.
